Frequently Asked Questions About Domain Registration
at TulaWeb
What is a domain name? [Top]
A domain name provides you with an identity, or address, on the
Internet. It helps you to find and to be found. When a computer
is searching for something on the Internet, it looks for a string
of digits known as an IP network address. The IP address for
our website is 66.70.178.171. You can enter that into your browser,
and get to our website, but TulaWeb.net is easier for most people
to remember A domain name is a human friendly alias for this
IP address. It is easier to remember than a string of digits.
Registering a suitable domain name on the Internet is the equivalent
of registering a company name. Whether you register it for business
or personal reasons, once it has been registered, no one else
can use that name.
My ISP gives me free web space. Why should
I register a domain name? [Top]
Most Internet service providers offer you a directory on their
own domain. Most of the time, they look like this: http://www.theirdomain.com/~yourname.
For a business, this does not look professional. Whether your
web site is for business or personal use, you are going to have
to explain the little squiggle mark (~ which is called a tilde)
to less net savvy people. Registering a domain name for your
business or organization is essential to your marketing efforts.
A domain name gives your business a unique identity on the World-Wide
Web.
How can I tell if the domain name I want
is already taken? [Top]
When you begin registering a domain name, we will search the
domain name database (which is known as "WHOIS") to
see if your requested domain name is available. If the domain
request comes up with "no match" you will then be able
to register that domain name. You can use our whois
to check the status of any domain.
How much does registering a domain name
cost? [Top]
At TulaWeb you can register a .com, .net or .org domain name
for only:
$24 / 1 Year
$40 / 2 Years
$60 / 3 Years

is due to expire. Just let us know and we'll be happy to assist
you.
My domain is already registered through
another Registrar? Do I have to transfer it, in order for TulaWeb
to host my site? [Top]
No. Just modify your DNS information with your existing Registrar
to:
NS1.FASTDNS.NET 64.213.103.201
NS2.FASTDNS.NET 64.33.120.76
Be sure you have uploaded all your files to your TulaWeb server
before you make the DNS change
Can I register a domain name through TulaWeb
if I'm not going use TulaWeb to host my web site?[Top]
Yes. You can register one or more domains and point them at your
existing free ISP site in order to simplify the address. You
can register them and put them on hold until you are ready to
use them, or you can simply use the DNS information for the server
that will host your site.
What happens if I register a domain and
someone claims it infringes on their trademark?[Top]
Please see the Uniform
Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy for details. Generally,
if you've registered the name in good faith, it's not a name
belonging to an internationally known company, and you can show
that you have a legitimate reason to use that name, then you
are likely to be able to keep that name. That may not be the
case if it can be shown that you purchased the name for the express
purpose of re-selling it to a company with a legitimate claim
to the name.
How do I choose a good domain name?
[Top]
Choose a name that reflects the intent and purpose of your web
site or business. Try to keep it short and snappy, and say it
out loud, as if you were telling someone at a party to visit
your web page. Some domain names look good on paper, but are
confusing when you try give it to someone over the phone. Keep
in mind the image that it conjures... your domain name will be
one of the ways people recognize or evaluate their sites for
their interests when they are searching via Yahoo or the other
search engines. When facing a large number of choices, the snappiest
domain sometimes grabs the most attention.
What are the valid characters for a domain
name and how long can it be? [Top]
The only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers
and a hyphen "-". Other special characters like the
underscore "_" or an exclamation mark "!"
are NOT permitted.
Example: your name.com (not correct, No spaces allowed)
Example: your-name.com (is correct)
A domain name can be up to 67 characters long -- including
the 4 characters used to identify the Top Level Domain (.NET,
.COM, or .ORG). Do not type the www. before your domain name
when registering.
Long domain names can lead to some confusion if you are not
careful. Just because you can use 67 characters, doesn't mean
you should. Extremely long domain names can be difficult to read.
Take a look at these two domain names:
thislongdomainnameishardtoread.com
this-long-name-is-easier-to-read.com
Putting hyphens between each word can make the domain name
easier for yourvisitors to read and remember.
What is the difference between yourdomain.com
and www.yourdomain.com? [Top]
yourdomain.com is the name of the domain itself. www.yourdomain.com
is the actual address of your domain on the Web. When your domain
is hosted by TulaWeb, visitors can reach your Website by typing
either yourdomain.com or www.yourdomain.com. Both will forward
visitors to the same website.
How do I change my domain name? [Top]
Once a domain name is registered, it is unchangeable. Instead,
you can register the different domain name you want and stop
using the one you don't.

(.ca, .us, .co, .uk, .ru etc.)? [Top]

but we'll be glad to assist you in finding the appropriate authority
for any other domain. Once you have registered a domain name,
we can host your web site, no matter what Top-Level Domain you
register
What is the difference between a Registry
a Registrar and a Registrant? [Top]
There is one Registry for every Top-Level Domain. The Registry
for .com, .net and .org domains is maintained by VeriSign Global
Registry Services.
A Registrar is a company that can enter new domains into the
Registry. The Registrar for domains registered through Tulaweb
is CORE Internet Council of Registrars.
The Registrant is the individual or organization that registered
a particular domain name.
For example, Jessica Smith (registrant) registers the name
jessicasmith.com through CORE Internet Council of Registrars
(TulaWebs registrar), who in turn writes the name to the central
database (registry).
